Thami Nodwele

I was born in Pretoria, South Africa and grew up in Soweto where I started my early years of schooling. When I passed my lower grades I was sent to boarding school where I finished my high school learning. I grew up with my cousins during the times of apartheid, life was tough. We could not understand why we were treated with less respect and hated compared to the nation.

Our grandmother, who raised us was against us questioning the government for our protection. When I was sixteen years old I was required to obtain a pass document because without that document at that age, I would be the victim of the police. I had to carry that document everywhere I went, praying I did not lose it.
