

Report of JBF Basic Writing & Media Communication Skills Workshop
The workshop was attended by about 23 activist journalists from different social justice organisations from in and around Johannesburg including Soweto Concerned Residents (SCR), Soweto Electricity Crisis Committee (SECC), Biafra National Congress ( BNC), Afrikan Writers Forum, etc, some of them were members of the Forum of Activist Journalists and joined the forum during the workshop. The workshop was held in the Internet Centre / Resource Centre at Khanya College on the 6th Floor.
The aims and objectives of the workshop :

To provide basic writing skills to activist journalist
-
To ensure that participants acquire good language skills
-
To provide the participants with the basic understanding of the process of journalistic writing
-
To provide participants with basic poster design skills, basic layout and design of posters
-
Providing participants with practical skills of using Internet based Social networking platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Blogs
-
To continue and concretize discussions on the Forum of Activist Journalists ( FAJ)
Day 1 : Grammar and Writing Skills
During this session participants were taught on how to construct correct sentences by doing different exercises like:-
Selecting the sentences that are grammatically correct from a number of different sentences,

Correcting sentences

Correcting pronouns
-
Completing incomplete sentences
-
Use of capital letters correctly
-
Use of full stops, commas, apostrophes, question marks, etc

Writing articles
Day 2: Making posters and pamphlets

Making posters

Making pamphlets

Newswriting skills

Discusions on : Understanding print media

Preparing media interviews
Day 3 & 4 : Social Networks
The topics covered included:

What are social networks?

What are the benefits of social networks?

What are the risks of social networking?

Minimizing risks of social networking
Other skills included :

How to open an e-mail account

How to use Facebook, Tweeter, Blogs
Day 4 : Discussion on Forum of Activist Journalists ( FAJ)
Discussion included a short presentation on what the aims and objectives of FAJ are and how does one become a member.
